Many web resources provide mechanisms for subscribing to changes in their content. However, this change information is only made available via a polling mechanism.
A number of people have proposed mechanisms for subscribing to updates to pages or feeds, however, a missing element of all these proposals is a subscription mechanism. Sadly, this means that every site supporting this feature will likely end up with a different implementation.

Its a rare day that a truly good standard comes along. Its an even rarer day that the standard get widely adopted. So the developers of Atom should stand up and take a bow - not only did they hit a home run with the Atom syndication format, they've done it again with the Atom publishing protocol. In case you are not familiar with Atom, the syndication format provides a standard format for saving blog content in XML and the publishing protocol provides a standard API for clients to read, create or update Atom documents stored on servers.

Mieux qu' IGoogle et sa page d'accueil personnalisable (comme Netvibes ), Google Reader iest une extension qui permet de regrouper ses flux RSS habituels. L'avantage sérieux de Google Reader, par rapport à Netvibes, c'est qu'on peut regrouper ses flux RSS par dossiers, «marquer» ou «taguer»certains billets unitairement (certains «posts») et ainsi retrouver plus facilement une info plus tard. De quoi tirer la pelote des fils RSS sans s'emmêler ! Autre innovation prometteuse, on peut marquer certains billets pour les faire partager à ses connaissances (ce sont les Shared Items). Un «widget» permet d'ouvrir une petite fenêtre sur ses flux de Google Reader, directement depuis sa page d'accueil de iGoogle, la boucle est bouclée. Enfin, il existe même une extension pour Firefox («LE» navigateur gratuit et libre qui a remplacé Internet Explorer) qui affiche, dans la barre d'état, le nombre de billets RSS non lus nouvellement apparus dans votre Google Reader (et y'a plus qu'à cliquer).

- RSS 1.0, ou Rich Site Summary, par le groupe RSS-DEV, et
- Atom par IETF, format largement utilisé mais toujours en cours de définition.

People who generate syndication feeds have a choice of feed formats. As of mid-2005, the two most likely candidates will be [WWW]RSS 2.0 and [WWW]Atom 1.0. The purpose of this page is to summarize, as clearly and simply as possible, the differences between the RSS 2.0 and Atom 1.0 syndication languages.
